The Sanad Association for Rights and Freedoms expresses its deep sorrow over the death of a Jordanian man in his twenties during an irregular migration journey through several European countries. He had been seeking to reach the Netherlands with the assistance of smugglers in pursuit of better employment opportunities. The Association extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
According to information received by the Association, the young man was travelling with a group of migrants in an irregular situation when their vehicle crashed during a pursuit by Croatian police. Two people, including the Jordanian man, lost their lives. Other young people of various nationalities sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Efforts to repatriate the Jordanian man’s remains faced difficulties because he was not carrying official identification documents. The relevant Jordanian authorities undertook sustained efforts and follow-up over several months, ultimately securing the return of his remains to Jordan. The Association commends these efforts and the commitment they reflect to assisting Jordanian citizens abroad.
The Association stresses that this tragic incident highlights the grave risks young people may face on irregular migration journeys, including transport accidents, exploitation by smuggling networks, violence, detention and loss of life. It also warns that promises of reaching destination countries quickly can obscure the true dangers of these journeys for young people and their families.
The Association emphasises the importance of combating migrant smuggling and reducing irregular migration through a comprehensive national response that combines awareness-raising, protection and economic empowerment. This response should provide young people with reliable information on regular migration pathways and safe alternatives, while upholding migrants’ rights and dignity.
The Sanad Association for Rights and Freedoms calls on national and international institutions and specialised organisations to join forces with local communities and relevant sectors to understand and address the drivers of irregular migration. It urges stronger efforts to expand training and employment opportunities, develop awareness programmes for young people and their families, and provide support and referrals for individuals at risk of exploitation.
The Association affirms its readiness to contribute to awareness-raising, prevention and partnership-building through a comprehensive action plan to reduce irregular migration and prevent its associated risks. This commitment is grounded in its mission to protect rights and freedoms, safeguard young Jordanians and support their aspirations for a safe and dignified future.
